How the project cash position is built up

Forecast margin is the contract value — including approved variations — less the forecast cost at completion. Earned revenue uses percent complete against that contract value. Retention is the portion of each certified payment the client holds back until defects liability ends — typically 5–10%, released in two tranches — and it sits as cash you have earned but cannot draw. Work-in-progress is cost incurred that has not yet been certified or billed. Net cash exposure adds the retention held and the WIP together: it is the working capital the job is tying up at this point in its life.

Approved variations change the contract value; pending variations are margin and cash you are carrying at risk until they are signed. A job can show a healthy margin on the cost report and still starve the business of cash if retention and unapproved variations pile up across a portfolio of projects. To see this live across every job — margin, retention, WIP and cash exposure in one view instead of a month-end spreadsheet — see analytics for EPC or book 30 minutes with Amit.
